A keen indoor rower, I religiously listen to my ipod during a workout. Annoyingly all the commercial dance music mixes tend to make me lose my stroke which is really frustrating. Having a piece of music specifically written to the correct bpm and exactly the type of music I love, has improved my performance immensely, giving me that extra push to work harder and longer!
Always found indoor rowing really boring, never could get motivated beyond about 10 minutes and music never really fitted. Stumbled across ‘rowing to music’ after a friend mentioned it, ended up buying Catch the Groove by Nick Reeve.
I liked the idea of the rhythmic bespoke music and noticed that CTG worked with the 3 beat rowing stroke.
It wasn’t until 45 minutes had flown by that I realised the power of this tool. I am an avid gym goer and now regularly use Catch the Groove as my weekly 45 min cardio session, being high intensity it’s challenging but the music drives me each time to the finish.
The music is brilliantly creative and diverse, predominantly instrumental, drawing from so many musical styles and influences – all electronic/dance. It kept me engrossed throughout. Plus the ending winds down to a beautiful chilled ambient close.
I see that Nick has modified Catch the Groove in to 3 x 20 minute workouts, perfect as a warm up for the rest of my gym session. Next on the list!
Brilliant idea and executed perfectly. Will be watching closely for future releases from Nick!
Give this a go!

I don’t normally do reviews but felt compelled to write this one.
I love listening to music on a workout, especially dance/electronic, but often find it a bit hit or miss in terms of matching rhythm and tempo. When it works it’s amazing and can really enhance the experience but it’s hard to get it right, especially for a rowing workout – that’s what makes CATCH THE GROOVE so excellent.
I was sceptical of a custom made rowing workout at first but when I flipped it onto my MP3 player I have never looked back, it was amazing!! Rowing to music has always been an issue for me but CATCH THE GROVE instantly hits the spot and effortlessly gets you into the rowing groove.
The best and surprising thing is the quality of the music – it really takes you on a journey throughout the set and feels more like a DJ set from some golden beach party than a workout!!!
I swear I have improved my rowing technique and workout intensity massively as a result of this. If you love dance music and need a motivating, stimulating rowing workout then is the one for you.
If your new to these ‘Virtual Rowing Coach’ albums this is a good place to start. This is the first album I bought and is still my high on my training playlist. I’ve been waiting a long time for something like this to appear and all I can say is it was definitely worth the wait.
This is the second track I’ve trialled out, I had high expectations of it and I wasn’t disappointed! Once again, it was another motivating and rewarding experience.
Contrary to my first few rows with “The River Flows Backwards”, I am now able to get into “the zone” and row in harmony with the music with little thought. Previously I did need to fully concentrate on my timing with the beat but this has become much more automatic with practice.
Particularly with the row I completed today, I did find my mind wondering as the ever changing beats and melodies sparked my imagination. I couldn’t help but imagine I was rowing on a placid lake in the Canadian mountains. Early on in the music there was a simple and deep beat which sparked an image of an albatross gracefully gliding to my side. As the tune became more “busy” with further instruments being added, I saw a small crowd of people running on the lake edge cheering me on. Finally, in the closing stage I eased to a stop with my boats wake fading into the calm still waters.
Honestly, this all really did happen in my little mind. My mind does tend to wonder during a workout but more so with the music these artists have produced. This particular track is simple to the ear but it has an interesting variety of sounds which has inadvertently sent my mind to a faraway place.
If you’re new to this and finding it hard to get in sync with the music, don’t worry! It’ll all happen very soon and you’ll no doubt be joining me on some oar-inspiring journeys!
I’ve been rowing on the Concept 2 rower for 10 years and now use it as my main way to keep fit. I’ve tried many ways to relieve the boredom of long rowing sessions and tried music of all types, but found it hard to keep in time with my favourite artisits so resorted to putting the tv in front of me! This music is great! It gives a new dimension to exercise. I couldn’t believe 45 minutes had gone by and it ended!! This is clever stuff. I don’t know how you’ve done it but by listening to the music makes you have a good workout but takes your mind away from it. I’m pretty fit and found it a good workout, getting on a good sweat, but I felt strangely relaxed – almost mesmerised! I’ll definitely be trying out more! Thanks. I’ll be checking out Nick’s music.
Wow, the time just flew by. it really didn’t seem like I’d been working for 45 minutes!
